test-taking-2If you’re considering a change, but aren’t sure which direction to go in, this is the perfect tool to get you started—and it’s free!

How well do you know yourself? What are your best qualities? What essential gifts can you leverage as you re-imagine a more authentic life?

martin.seligmanI love this test. Developed by the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, under the leadership of Dr. Martin Seligman, The VIA Signature Strength Survey is free, takes 15 minutes to complete online, and measures the degree to which you embody each of 24 character strengths.

A-testGood news: You can’t fail. Each of the 24 strengths falls under one of 6 categories: Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance, and Transcendence. All good qualities. And each of us has these 24 strengths, but in uniquely varying degrees.

The idea behind this test, which has been scientifically validated and taken by 2.6 million people worldwide, is that “People who know and utilize their unique strengths have stronger relationships, find more engagement in their work, and lead happier, more fulfilling lives.”

My top three strengths are Judgment, Perseverance, and Honesty. What are yours?

  1. Mine were love of learning, appreciation of beauty and excellence, and curiosity.

I’m not sure how I feel about the results. For example, spirituality was 24th (that’s really, really wrong!!) and I think that was because I answered in the negative about religion. (I don’t equate being religious with being spiritual.)

It raises an interesting question about such tests: how important is the language used in the questions themselves in determining the results?

    1. I choose not to focus too much on the lower end of the strengths and do agree that the religious/spirituality wording is a little funky. Thanks for checking out the test!!
